Which Way Shall We Go (the backroads)

Updated: Sep 18, 2019

Ed and I differ in terms of how we get to where we’re going in our new “neighborhood”. Given the choice of taking the tried and true main roads or taking the backroads, I’m a backroad girl most of the time.

If it takes a little longer using the backroads – I’m OK with that. If things are a little windier – I’m OK with that too. To me, the only way to learn my new geography is to drive it (I do have the benefit of an area map such that the risk of getting lost really isn’t that great).

I love seeing all the different pretty scenery and the fact that there really isn’t much (if any at all) traffic makes it so much the better. I still need to watch for deer (and given my experience to date, I stand a greater chance of a deer crossing in front of my car on the back roads than I do on the main highways making it that much more important to stay alert and not get lulled into a false sense of security). I love seeing the cows, horses, goats, donkeys, alpaca, and sheep right close-up; I love seeing the various old farmhouses and barns with newer homes scattered among them periodically. I love seeing people outside and doing what they do. From time to time I see a mouse crossing the street, a cat that’s wandered, and birds galore. I see horses and buggy’s being driven to a greater extent than on the main drags (although, I see them there as well) and best of all, I appreciate the changes that I get to see up close and personal as the time of day and ultimately the seasons change.

Whenever Ed and I go out together, he usually drives. Unless I can convince him otherwise (and sometimes I can), we will take the main roads (and I do enjoy those as well). But when I’m behind the wheel, I will take the road less traveled (although - we’ll see what happens in winter…).
