This post is a little late in coming. The first weekend in October was family weekend at my son’s university.
His roommate is a friend that our son has had since Junior Kindergarten. Not only were they school friends, they also went through scouting together (both achieved the rank of Eagle Scout). Because of this, we have become friends with his roommate’s parents (they were active in scouting as was Ed; they and Ed went on many a camping trip, hike, etc. together).
Because of our history, we made an adventure of the university’s family weekend. His roommate’s parents came to our property on Friday night and brought their pop-up camper trailer with them. This allowed them their privacy and a comfortable place to sleep (we were able to supply the bathroom and hot shower).
We had a wonderful weekend with them starting with a campfire and conversation on Friday night. We had a nice breakfast at the Kickapoo Café and then left from there to visit our sons. We arrived at the school around 1pm and our own son had yet to shower; in fact, both boys seemed surprised that we were there (even though we had arranged this with them ahead of time!).
Ultimately, we were glad to learn that all was going well with both boys (socially, academically and work-wise). We hung around and chatted; we went to lunch, we got a tour of their facility, and hung around some more before the boys had had enough. We took their not-so-subtle hints and returned to the property very much comforted by the laughter, stories, and conversation.
It was raining when we returned so we played cards, talked, went for a walk, and called it a night. Before everyone left on Sunday, we had many cups of coffee with Kringle and went for a walk on the property. We met up again at Culvers in Cross Plains and then headed home.
One of the things the four of us decided on was that our property lends itself to camping, given that it’s flat by the road and driveway. There’s been talk of a reunion among the parents who were involved in the scouting outings and it was finally decided (by us four at least) that our property would make the perfect gathering spot. Especially since many of the camping, canoeing, biking, caving, and kayaking outings/trips were done in the Driftless area within 30 minutes or so from our property. Realistically, this probably won’t get coordinated until next year, but we will be looking forward to it!
