Two Grandmothers - Visiting During Harvest Season

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

We did not work on our property this weekend (a blessing and a curse). Instead, Ed and I each brought our respective mothers to go sightseeing (the blessing).

While we only had Saturday to “play”, we ended up taking in a lot of the Apple/Harvest Season’s local color. It’s the time of year where all the areas’ apple orchards and their associated shops are full of tourists. Looking at license plates, there was probably one Illinois or Iowa license plate for every Wisconsin plate.

The Gays Mills area was especially busy. We were lucky to get pie at the Pie Depot and find a table outside to eat it on. My mom and I each got Apple Pie (I had wanted Peach Pie, but the person in line before us bought the last slice), Ed had Blackberry Pie and his mom had a Cherry Turnover. We each thought our treats were some of the best and freshest we’d ever had. Ed’s mom even bought a Pecan Pie to take home with her.

We also stopped at the Peck’s Farm Market in Spring Green, Heck’s Farm Market just east of Spring Green, Oakwood Fruit Farm in Richland Center, Hillcrest Apple Market, and Sunrise Apple Orchards in Gays Mills. The Sunrise Apple Orchard was by far the busiest (absolutely crazy busy; their lots were completely full and we had to park on the street several “blocks” away), but Oakwood Fruit Farm had the best prices. We also stopped at the Amish Furniture Outlet in Richland Center.

Gays Mills had a harvest fest / flea market; we went to that as well. We’d been expecting a small little country festival but found ourselves at quite the large event. There were probably 100+ times as many cars and people there as the entire population of Gays Mills itself – we were quite surprised.

For “Linner” we went to our tried and true Country Gardens in Soldiers Grove (we couldn’t let our mothers leave without trying the best pizza EVER).

The day wound down as we went for a walk on our property and then sat by a campfire. We saw lots of deer in the distance as we sat by the fire at dusk; we also heard lots of distant gunfire as our neighbors sighted in for hunting season.

We headed back on Sunday but did manage to make time for breakfast at the Richland Family Restaurant (another tried and true of ours) on the way out and a stop at the Carr Valley Cheese Store in Mazomanie - our favorite because they have lots and lots of samples and always an endless supply of squeaky fresh cheese curds.

We are so thankful that we were able to have had our mothers come and visit at the same time; we only hope we didn’t wear them out.
