Smallest Rooms of the House

I knew that it would take several weeks to rehab the hall closet and pantry. However, when you stand there and look at them, it is hard to believe that you can't just knock out such a project in a weekend. As with all of our projects, it was a series of steps. The pantry needed a new door, so mortises had to be cut for hinges and the door finished. Trim had to be painted, or cut, or both. The walls needed a good scrubbing and a coat of primer. The shelves were grubby, so new shelves needed to be cut. And on and on...

This weekend we wrapped up the hall closet. The old closet rod was too close to the overlying shelf so hangers were difficult to, well, hang. A new closet rod was fitted to solve the problem. It has been returned to service on a temporary basis, as eventually the hall closet will get a tile floor when the hall tile goes in, hopefully by Labor Day.

The pantry was returned to permanent service, with its bright white shelves. Its floor, made of pine plank to match the kitchen, was installed last November. The door needs a few more coats of polyurethane, but we hung it for a short time so I could install stops on the jambs. I had to stand in the pantry to do that, with an air compressor and headlamp, which would not be possible with full shelves. Back to the garage the door went, to the makeshift spray booth fashioned from plastic dropcloths. Two more weeks and the door will go in for good. I will need to cut a mortise for the strike plate, but that should hopefully be a quick project - I can always hope.

Nothing but White!
