Richland Center's Gun Show

Updated: Feb 28, 2020

Richland Center Gun Show Sign

I write this entry with some trepidation. Nowadays, there are so many things that polarize our society. Guns are near the top of that list.

Driving into town this weekend, we saw a sign for a gun show. Being in a rural area, guns are commonplace. Our neighbor farmer has a rifle in a rack on his UTV. Our neighbors to the south use their land almost exclusively for hunting. Our son was on the trap team in high school. Here, I consider a gun to be a tool rather than a political statement.

We stopped in at the gun show on our way out of town because Maggie has expressed an interest in learning how to shoot. She would like a handgun, but I am leaning towards starting her out with a light-caliber, single-shot shotgun. While looking at used guns at Cabela's, I came across a Savage Model 42, which has an over/under barrel for a .22 and a .410 cartridge. This seems like a good compromise as it gives her more than one shot, but she is unlikely to hurt herself (or me). There was a nice single-shot .410 at the gun show, but no Model 42s. No purchase was made... (yet)...
