Our First Batch of 2022 Apples

2 Crates of Apples

One benefit of apples is that they can last for a while un-processed. When the weather cools off a bit more, I look forward to pressure canning apple preserves.

The peeling, coring, and cutting will be quite the project but I did buy a little gadget that proports to do all three functions at once... I have used it before with a fair amount of success and will be very glad to have the gadget again once I go to work...

While I've been thinking of apple preserves, Ed's been thinking of apple butter and apple sauce. Somehow, those two versions of canned apples seem like a lot more work to me (having never done either before). We'll see if I can muster up enough of an adventurous spirit to tackle the additional versions of apple canning.

In the past, I've made apple scrap vinegar with good success and will likely make some more as I've gone through most of what I made last year. I tend to make a couple gallons at a time when I do do it.

When we bought our property, we were pleasantly surprised the first year to see that there were 7 old / overgrown apple trees in our front pasture. The apples pictured above are our first harvest from one of those trees (the tree that typically produces ripe fruit the earliest). In theory, I should be able to harvest many more apples, but we'll see if I can keep up with processing... I look forward to having livestock some day and being able to let said livestock forage all the excess apples.
