In May, we received a very large and tall pile of mixed old hay and cow manure. The pile was so large that we couldn't conceive using it all within the next year. It was taller than the top of the fence (even taller than us) and it was W-I-D-E!
...It was hot too. When I would go to bury food scraps within the pile, it would "smoke / steam" and emit such a large amount of heat that I was certain I could've fried an egg on it.
Since May (it is now the beginning of July), the pile has shrunk so much that we can hardly believe it; probably 50% or more). Now when we look at it, we think we need to source some additional composting materials... (we have plans to plant fruit trees next spring and another small garden bed).
