About three weeks ago, Ed planted "Johnny Oaky" in our front yard by the road. Johnny Oaky is a new oak tree that was a gift from Ed's mom to replace the old old oak tree (stump shown in picture) that blew down in a storm a couple years ago now.
Ed has continued to mourn the loss of that old oak tree; the shade it provided in the summer; the grand nature of the tree in general - so typical of old oaks.
If I understand correctly, Ed's mom got the tree at one of her garden club events. She named the tree "Johnny" in remembrance of her husband / Ed's father. The tree's last name (Oaky) was my contribution to the name; hence, "Johnny Oaky".
We've been watering the tree several times per week as we try to set it up for a successful overwintering.
It won't be in our lifetime, and likely not even in Henry's lifetime (our son) that Johnny Oaky gets to be as big and grand as the original; but, we feel good knowing that we're laying the groundwork.
