Measuring and Drafting

Updated: Sep 18, 2019

I never cease to be appreciative of the difference in perspective that my husband Ed provides. One clear example for me relates to how each of us approached measuring our first floor for purposes of determining door sizes (eventually we’d like to replace doors), kitchen cabinet requirements, flooring square footage, paint, window sizes, etc.

Trying to find a job that I could do early on, I volunteered to take measurements. I set about measuring doors, windows, ceiling heights, and the kitchen cabinets themselves and recorded these measurements on an item by item basis.

On observing my efforts, my husband stepped in to expand the viewpoint (and in my mind, the amount of effort). Together, we measured walls, distances to windows, window trims, closet dimensions, etc. on a room view basis. From all the measurements taken, he was able to use his newly purchased drafting table (Craigslist; $10) to draft an accurate and to scale floorplan with all measurements noted therein.

This has proved to be worth the effort many times over. Every time that we made a flooring, paint, cabinet purchase, we were able to readily ascertain the amount of material that we would require. Additionally, I can look at his floor plan and know whether a piece of furniture that we already have in our city house will be able to find a place to reside in our new home. When the time is right, we will know window treatment dimensions and dimensions for those built-in bookcases that I want.

At the time, I thought he was being an unnecessary stickler in terms of how we measured and then recorded our measurement data; now I understand why!
