Logo Design

Updated: Feb 15, 2021

I do not watch a lot of homesteading YouTube channels, but Maggie has several she follows. As a result, when I open YouTube on our tablet, videos for some of her channels show up on the home page. One day, I noticed a video from That 1870s Homestead channel. The sweatshirt the wife was wearing caught my eye, as it featured a large logo they had created for their homestead. I thought it might be fun to have a logo for Blackhammer Acres.

I did not want to create something that was generic, or pulled from the web as clip art. Our property also does not have much in the way of unique features that could serve as inspiration - no stream or rock formation or odd-looking tree. We do have a unique looking barn, which Maggie suggested we try and use. We are located in an area with a large population of Amish, so I thought something patterned on a quilt square may be eye-catching.

Unfortunately, we have very limited artistic skills. I play around with pen, ink, and watercolors, so made a few attempts this weekend during the harsh, cold weather. I scanned the sketches to create JPEG files, pulled them into PowerPoint, and added some details. Since we are nearing maple syrup season, my short-term goal was to create a logo to use as a label to put on a canning jar lid. The label would also have space for writing the jar's contents and date. We ended up with two decent results.

At the moment, we are more partial to the barn version. The quilt square colors are based on the barn's colors, so there is some tie-in there to the property. A logo needs to be something that is easy to add to anything from letterhead to labels to shirts, so I am not sure we have found the right one yet, but it was a fun way to spend a day on the couch.
