Kitchen Tile, Part 2

After letting the thinset cure, we moved on to grouting our kitchen backsplash tile. Based on her research, Maggie sent me to the store with three options for colors: 'standard white', 'bright white', and 'whisper grey'. The tile store clerk informed me that 'whisper grey' was not available in sanded grout, so it was a choice between white and ...white. I bought one bag of 'standard white' sanded grout and a tube of matching caulk.

After taping off the counter and putting down some protective rosin paper, I mixed a small batch and worked the grout into the tile joints with a rubber grout float. Grouting tip #1 is to only grout an area such that you can start cleaning the surface after about 15 minutes. There were five separate areas of tile in the kitchen, so it was easy to grout a couple of sections, and then go back with a slightly damp sponge and wipe the excess grout off the tile It is a balance as you want to get the grout off the tile, but not introduce a lot of water that will wash the grout out of the joint or weaken the grout. a well-wrung sponge and plenty of clean water is your best friend for grouting.

The grouting only took a couple of hours. I washed up my tools and buckets, and let the tile sit for the rest of the day. As expected, a haze of grout appeared as the moisture dried from the tile surface. A dry rag and some buffing was all that was needed to remove the haze from the ceramic tile. It will be a little harder to remove the haze from our upcoming slate tile floor project, as the natural stone is more porous.

The next day, I taped off the joints between the the tile and countertops to caulk the joints. Tip #2 is to use painters tape for crisp and thin caulk lines. This is one of my least favorite tasks, so I took my time and slowly caulked my way around the kitchen, pulling the tape off as I went. We re-hung the vent and put up the switchplates to wrap this project up.

Our tile backsplash, awaiting a stove

All in all, it was a success. The tile has not fallen off the wall, and looks straight. The white tile and white grout produced a bright kitchen, which is what we wanted as it is a small space. All we have to do is install a stove. Because it is a gas stove, that is a job for a plumber. All I have to do is get the stove from the garage to the kitchen. One more task, and we will be able to make frozen pizzas and this room will be done.
