The 5 hours it took to get to having 7 quarts of canned apples consisted mainly of coring, peeling, and slicing; even with my gadget that does all 3 tasks at once.
It didn't take all that long to cook them down once the prep was done; then, it was 25 minutes in the steamer canner (we're just barely over 1000 feet elevation as far as I can tell... this adds five minutes to what would have otherwise been a 20 minute processing time for quarts; it was another 5 minutes in the canner after the heat was off (for steamer canning, this 5 minutes is required processing time...)).
I did manage to taste the smidgeon that was left over and they're going to be delicious - either on their own or as apple pie filling.
The plan for tomorrow is to make apple sauce...
