This week, our hayfield had its second cutting; it was so nice seeing the hay bales scattered in the field when we arrived. The cutting wasn’t as abundant as the first cutting was, as all of the spring and early summer rain had prevented a timely harvesting of the first cut and the field had been slow in growing back. The picturesque scene didn’t last for long; on Saturday, the farmer came to gather the bales up and haul them away.
We noticed that the farmer across the street still has his first cut hay bales in his field. And while we really enjoy the view, we wondered to ourselves how he will get his second cutting. Also, are the bales killing the grass underneath? When our farmer came to talk a little on Sunday, he had the same line of thought. At least we’re on the right track in terms of our thinking… (or getting there anyway)… Hopefully, we'll get a chance to use this information someday.
