DIY Laundry Soap Recipe; Extremely Cheap

Updated: Sep 20, 2019

I’ve been making my own laundry detergent for about 6-7 years now. I started doing this to be cost effective and to get back to a simpler laundry soap without chemicals that I’m not familiar with. I also wanted to eliminate artificial fragrances in my family’s laundry. The recipe I use is as follows and requires 1/8 cup per load of laundry (it is extremely cheap in terms of cost per load):

· 1 bar of soap finely grated. I use either Kirk’s Original Castile Soap that I’ve found at either Walmart or any major grocery store or a natural soap bar that I’ve purchased in bulk from the www.naturalsoapwholesale.com website.

· 1 cup of baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate); I add it for odor control.

· 1 cup of Borax (aka sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate, is a boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid); I add it for whitening / stain removal. Toxicity is not fully known but it’s generally accepted as not posing a health risk when used as a laundry additive. I find this at Walmart or at major grocery stores.

· 1 cup of Washing Soda (aka sodium carbonate or soda ash); added for cleaning and water softening properties; is toxic if ingested or if in contact with an open wound => handle with care; don’t breath in dust; make sure laundry is well rinsed before drying. I find this at Walmart or at major grocery stores. This could be eliminated from the recipe if one were to have concerns with this ingredient.
