Mel's Brewing Company Dinner (Sandwich and Beer) Richland Center Wisconsin
Mel's Brewing Company Half Eaten Dinner and Bear

It’s been fun going out to eat once each weekend when we’re in town doing our rehab work. We don’t have a kitchen or a working refrigerator - I don’t want to pay the electricity to keep a refrigerator going; refrigerators are very heavy energy users. Once we’re more settled, we will start preparing meals, but until we’re set up for it, getting out to eat (and explore) is a nice diversion and something to look forward to as we work.

There aren’t the multitude of food options within a reasonable drive like there are in the Milwaukee area, but there are still plenty of choices. We find places that look good through our trips to the hardware stores and from local magazines and newsletters such as the “Voice of the River Valley”, one of our “go to” favorites.

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed every place we’ve been.

Sometimes, we opt for a packaged sandwich or breakfast sandwich from the local country store; really a gas station with some limited but good food and beverage items. Sometimes we go to the Viroqua Food Co-op, which has an amazing selection of prepared foods including salads, wraps, sandwiches, unconventional pizzas, and desserts. We’ve made a couple of trips to Viroqua’s Rooted Spoon for wonderful and original tacos (made with locally sourced, seasonal, and sustainably produced ingredients), and to the Richland Family Restaurant and the Center Cafe for classic comfort food. We’ve enjoyed original paninis at Christy’s Sunny Side Café in Richland Center. In Readstown, we’ve had wonderful hamburgers, Ruebens, and chicken sandwiches at the Kickapoo Cafe and a nice dinner at the Kickapoo Corners Family Restaurant.

We recently had dinner at Mel’s Micro in Richland Center. The ribeye steak sandwich and portabella mushroom sandwiches, both on fresh buns, were very good. The house-brewed beer was also good.

To date, we’ve had amazing tacos, sandwiches, paninis, biscuits and gravy, and nachos. But ever since we’ve had some local pizza from the Country Gardens Bar & Grill in Soldiers Grove, we just can’t stop going back. And while they offer quite a bit on their menu that looks and sounds wonderful, we just can’t get past the pizza.

We talk about the pizza on our trek to the property; we talk about it at the property (in anticipation of going), we even try to consider going somewhere else or at least trying something different on the menu. It’s literally the best we’ve ever had! And as it turns out, having delicious pizza once per week is not too much (at least not yet).

Our concerted goal for this weekend is to try something different; either a different restaurant or a different menu item. Anything but pizza really. It will be hard, but in the end, I’m sure we’ll enjoy wherever it is we go and whatever it is we get.
