Coop Completed

The chicks are entering week five of six, and are getting quite large. They are rapidly outgrowing their cage in the basement. Maggie has started to vary their diet by adding grass and dandelions, and pureed pumpkin from the last few gourds from 2022, which they seem to love.

Their new home is finally complete!

We have been pushing hard to convert a shed to a chicken coop. The last few weeks have seen a flurry of details checked from the list. We added a couple of inches of sand to the floor, built a storage locker, and installed brackets to hang feeders from. On the outside, we added gutters and a solar light, prepped for an electric fence, and re-installed the automatic door to let the chickens out.

There are a couple of items left to take care of. We would like to add a rain barrel so we can collect water for the chickens, and build a movable shelter for shade. I would also like to add a solar-powered vent fan at some point. But for now, the chickens should be comfortable and safe.

Just in time for spring planting - on to the next project!
