Chickens and Kittens Are Growing Quickly

8 Week Old Chicken Sitting on Knee

10 Week Old Black Kittens Eating on Outdoor Table

Our baby chicks are starting to look like chickens - more and more every day. Our little kittens are growing quickly as well.

While sitting outside in the chicken run this evening, I was very surprised when all of a sudden I saw and felt a chick hop up on my knee. I thought I only had limited amount of time to snap a picture; however, that chicken wasn't going anywhere - I eventually had to "shoo" it off so as to complete my evening chores.

I don't handle our chickens; but, they do know my voice and they do seem to be very comfortable when I'm around (they seem to know I take care of them and that I give them food and water).

That became a problem for the first time this evening when I wanted to get the chickens inside their coop and "tuck them in". It was almost a "no go" - they wanted to stay outside and no amount of coercing on my part could get them in - at least for a good 5 minutes or so...

Our kittens are growing too. They also seem to know that I'm their caretaker. Whenever I go outside, they're right there at my feet. They'll crawl up my leg and/or jump onto my lap. They follow me around (so long as I don't go too far away from the back porch). Given their very curious nature, they desperately want to come inside the house and it gets a bit tricky when I'm coming and going. The cats came to us as outdoor barn kittens and are intended to be and remain our outdoor barn cats (not indoor cats). Their job will eventually be to catch mice, moles, voles and possibly snakes whose presence we expect to otherwise intensify given our new chickens...
