Buying Sweet Corn Seeds in "Bulk" for Our Garden

Ed and I are still relatively new gardeners.

Historically, when buying seeds for garden sweet corn, we've bought little packets of seed at $2-$3 dollars each (plus or minus a little). We've typically tried to cover an area of about 5 feet by 8 feet (40 square feet) and plant a little denser in that space. This means that the cost of those little seed packets have added up...

This year, we tried something new. We purchased corn seeds in "bulk" from our local hardware store. We also got a small amount of melon seeds and some onion sets. The price of the onion sets and melon seeds seemed very reasonable. The price of the sweet corn seeds took us back a little. Looking at the receipt, it seems as though those corn seeds cost us about $45 all told. While we have increased the area we'd like to cover with those seeds by a little bit, it turns out that if we do get a corn harvest this year, our cost per ear of corn is probably going to be a bit higher than if we just purchased the fresh sweet corn outright.

Last year, our planted corn did not produce due to the deer taking over and eating everything in the evenings. (A neighbor did grace us with about 2 dozen ears of home grown sweet corn as a neighborly gesture that comes with over abundance and we were very thankful.) This year, Ed fenced in our garden and we hope that this will cause the deer to look elsewhere... The financial stakes on this "ounce" of prevention have just gotten even higher...Fingers crossed.
