Bathroom Progress

Among the gardening and other outdoor activities, we still have a house we are trying to update. We are slowly nearing the finish line, with the main bathroom one of the last big projects. Earlier this year, we hired a plumber to install a new bathtub and surround. He also temporarily set a new toilet and vanity.

Once we finished putting the garden to bed, I took on a couple of bathroom updates before snow started to fall. Maggie had bought some hooks to use for towels, so I bought a pine board, softened the edges with a router, primed and painted, and mounted the hooks to create a custom towel rack. I then painted the ceiling and several of the accessible walls so I could mount the new towel rack without having to take it down again. Even though I could not paint a full wall due to the vanity, I painted most of the wall so I could install a medicine cabinet without having to paint around it. The original bathroom did not have a medicine cabinet, just a mirror and a ceiling-hung light fixture.

We had an electrician install a wall junction box for a light several years ago, and we have since been living with just a bare bulb and a small mirror. Once the wall was painted, I cut an opening for the new medicine cabinet, installed new framing, and patched and painted over the drywall screws. The new light fixture went in next.

Installing the actual medicine cabinet was the easy part. It just slid into the opening. I shimmed it level, drove four screws, and another item was checked off the list. We ordered tile a week ago, but that will have to wait until spring when it is warmer and I can cut the backer board and use the wet saw outside. That will be a big job, as I need to removed the toilet and vanity, pull up the old floor, put down backer board, set tile, and grout. A little molding and re-installation of the plumbing fixtures, and another room will be complete.
