Backup Systems to Allow for Off-Grid; in General

I guess I have a little bit of the “prepper” mentality; I’ve had it for while. Even so, it’s not anything that I’ve acted upon (yet). With both Ed and I working full-time jobs and raising our son, there just never seemed to be the time.

Now with our new property, I’d like to get to the point where we can build in some back—up systems to prepare us just in case the grid goes down (short term or longer term). I’m

hopeful that we never will need to use back-ups; but I’d feel better being prepared just in case, especially as the property is in the middle of the country (and a good 15-30 minutes from town and conveniences by car).

My initial thoughts in terms of the order with which we will tackle these issues continues to change as I weigh priorities and costs, but my first rack and stack pass looks something like this:

  • Toilet

  • Laundry

  • Water

  • Heating and Cooling

  • Communication

  • Electricity

  • Transportation
