Backup Systems to Allow for Off-Grid Communications

I’m debating about maintaining a landline; to date, we have.

My original thought process has been that I want a way to phone if our power is out or if the cell phone grid/network is down (=> I’ve maintained corded landline phones in our city house even though Ed and I and our son all have cell phones). I also know that they are (or at least were) a more secure option when conducting confidential personal business via phone (ex: banking).

My new thought process is coming from the realization that most individuals and businesses now have phones that are either cell phones or internet-based phones. My own business uses an internet-based phone. That means that if the cell phone network or internet went down, I’d still effectively be without a phone because anyone that I’d likely want to call would also be down (even if I myself had a pure landline).

With respect to security, I’m just not sure anymore…

Ed and our son did get licensed to use a Hamm Radio several years ago. We even purchased a Hamm Radio at that time. Aside from the initial fascination, it really hasn’t gone anywhere since then. Our son has since taken his Hamm Radio to college with him (we’re not sure why). Ed and I have talked a little about purchasing another Hamm Radio as a back-up means of communication.

We’ll see where this goes – I’m still pondering.
