I recently found a website entitled “Blind Pig and the Acorn”. While briefly perusing, I found the following words of wisdom that really rang true to me; especially the older I get. It’s a prescription that anyone can fill; best of all, it’s free.
Here’s the prescription: “If you’re filled with worry – work. If you’re disappointed – work. If you’re burdened with heavy responsibilities – work. If sorrow comes – work. If dreams are shattered – work. If hope seems dead – work. If you’re happy and want to stay that way – work. No matter what your condition – work. Work as if your life depended on it. It really does.”
If you don’t have anything to work on or nothing that needs doing – no matter – go find something. Go outside and dig a hole if nothing else. Then, fill it back up again... You get the idea.
Here at our property, both Ed and I work – we really work. The work that we do, more often than, not involves down home good hard labor. We’re tired at the end of the day as we then turn our attention to deciding what needs to be done next. But even though our muscles and backs are sore at day's end, when all is said and done, we wouldn’t trade our life for nothing. We’re dreaming, plotting, planning, and building our vision of our future and that feels real good.
It seems that when we stop working, when we stop contributing, and when we stop growing, we start dying. My belief is that we all need purpose and we all need to work with our hands; it’s what we were built for. Work. Good for the body, mind, and soul.
May there always be something next for us to work on!
