About Us

The name of our blog is taken from one of the soil types on our land - Blackhammer Silt Loam. Our son thinks it sounds like something out of Magic the Gathering.

Maggie – I have been looking for a property in the county for over 20 years! Seeking a sustainable life, I have been slowly building up my homesteading skills by making everything from soap to kombucha. My son and I have been gardening since he earned Gardening merit badge in Boy Scouts, when he grew his own kohlrabi and radishes. I am looking forward to finally having a place to have some chickens!

Ed – I have always enjoyed the outdoors, dating back to my time as a nature counselor at a summer camp in high school. Finding it difficult to sit still, I have taken up many hobbies over the years that have ranged from beermaking to photography to fly tying.  I am looking forward to creating a workshop to putter in and avoid working on the farmhouse!

Henry – I am a student at the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. I am in favor of whatever keeps my parents busy, so they can’t visit me at school. However, care packages are always appreciated!

Maxie – Maggie and Ed adopted me from the Humane Society. I love being outside and walking around the property, but I am not fond of the farmhouse yet. Maybe once there is some actual furniture and beds to sleep on…
